Mom Goes Back To Work

Here we are in week 9 and I made my transition this week back to work. Of course back to work for me does not involve leaving the house or even leaving my pajamas if I don’t want….but the work is still the same, however, and does involve my full attention and ability to attend to my clients needs, ASAP. So, on Monday I experienced my first working mom moment. I was giving Sullivan a bottle and my cell phone rang. I noticed that is was a return call from a perspective client and decided to take it even though baby was in hand. So balancing the bottle under my chin and the baby in one arm, I picked up the call and thus began the comedy. Why I thought I could juggle feeding and important business call is beyond me but I tried and unfortunately failed. Of course Sullivan, a usually peaceful baby, became fussy as soon as I picked up the phone. I tried to pass him off to Damon but he was working a deadline in his home office, the next room. He was experiencing technical difficulties with his MAC(as usual) and didn’t quite understand my frantic mom sign language for “TAKE THE BABY NOW!” So while my perspective client is sharing all of her home buying needs, assuming that I am giving her my full attention, I was actually running around the house trying to figure out where to put the baby while I finish this call…preferably a place where my client will not hear the screams when I lay him down and take his bottle away. Well needless to say I did find a place to set him down while I finished the call, he DID scream when I took his bottle away, and I DID miss half of what my perspective client had shared with me and had to ask her to repeat nearly everything….lucky for me this new client is a working mom herself and was very understanding. So, yes, working from home DOES have its advantages. One, I don’t have to shower if I don’t want, two I can still watch General Hospital at 2, and three Damon and I get to care for and enjoy Sullivan whenever we want in the comfort of our own home….Now if we could just figure out a way to press pause on the work button when both the baby is crying and important calls are coming in. That would then indeed be the perfect work from home system. Wish us luck!
